What is Mindset and How to Work with It in Coaching
Mindset is the set of beliefs, attitudes, and assumptions a person holds about their abilities and the world. In coaching, particular attention is paid to the difference between a fixed mindset (abilities are innate and unchangeable) and a growth mindset (abilities can be developed through effort and learning).
Origin and History
The concept of growth mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck of Stanford University and presented in her book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success (2006). Her research showed that the mindset a person adopts directly influences their motivation, resilience, and achievements.
How It's Applied in Coaching
- Identifying the Current Mindset: Explore how the client responds to mistakes, challenges, and feedback. These are signals of their mindset.
- Questioning Beliefs: Limiting beliefs are the expression of a fixed mindset. Work through them with NLP techniques and Socratic questioning.
- Reframing Failure: Help the client see mistakes as information, not proof of incapacity.
- Growth Language: Replace 'I can't' with 'I can't yet,' 'I'm a mess' with 'I'm learning.'
- Celebrating the Process: Reinforce effort and learning, not just results.
