What is NLP in Coaching — Neuro-Linguistic Programming

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a communication and personal change approach that studies how language, thought, and behavior patterns interrelate and how they can be modified to produce different results. In coaching, it is used to work on beliefs, emotional states, communication, and habit change.

Origin and History

It was created by Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of California, Santa Cruz, in the 1970s, drawing from the study of exceptional therapists such as Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls, and Virginia Satir. Its premise is that by modeling what successful people do, you can reproduce their results.

How It's Applied in Coaching

  1. Anchoring: Associate a positive emotional state with a stimulus (gesture, word, image) the client can activate when needed.
  2. Reframing: Change the meaning the client gives to an experience or situation to generate a more useful perspective.
  3. Timeline: Visualize the past, present, and future to work through traumas, goals, or shifts in perspective.
  4. Modeling: Identify the mental strategies of people who have already achieved what the client wants.
  5. Meta-model: Question the language patterns that reveal limitations in the client's mental map.
