What is a Coaching Assessment and How to Do It

The coaching assessment is the initial evaluation process that allows the coach and client to obtain a clear, complete picture of the client's current situation: where they are, what resources they have, what holds them back, and where they want to go. It is the starting point of any effective coaching process.

Origin and History

Assessment has been inherent to coaching since its origins. The International Coach Federation (ICF) includes it within the competency of 'Designing the coaching alliance,' and it is part of the standard process in any certified coaching modality.

How It's Applied in Coaching

  1. Quantitative Tools: Wheel of Life, PERMA model, Rosenberg Scale, Big Five. These generate numerical data that make tracking easier.
  2. Qualitative Tools: Personal SWOT, lifeline, exploration questionnaire. These generate narratives and deep reflection.
  3. Initial Interview: A discovery session to understand the client's story, goals, and resources.
  4. Defining the Starting Point: Document the starting situation so progress can be measured at the end of the process.
