What is the PERMA Model in Coaching and Positive Psychology
The PERMA model is a positive psychology framework developed by Martin Seligman to define the components of human well-being. PERMA is an acronym for: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Achievement. In coaching, it's used to assess and strengthen the client's overall well-being.
Origin and History
It was proposed by Martin Seligman in his book Flourish (2011), as an evolution of his earlier model of authentic happiness. Seligman is one of the founders of positive psychology, and his work has deeply influenced well-being coaching and leadership.
How It's Applied in Coaching
- Positive Emotions: What level of positive emotion does the client experience in daily life? How can they cultivate more gratitude, joy, and hope?
- Engagement: In which activities do they enter a state of flow? What fully absorbs them?
- Relationships: What are their meaningful relationships like? Do they have deep, supportive connections?
- Meaning: Do they belong to something larger than themselves? Do they have a clear purpose?
- Achievement: Do they have goals to pursue? Do they celebrate their progress and successes?
