What is an Action Plan in Coaching and How to Create One

The action plan in coaching is the bridge between the client's goal and its execution. It defines the concrete steps, deadlines, and resources needed to reach the objective. It is the tangible outcome of a coaching session and the commitment the client makes to themselves.

Origin and History

The concept of the action plan has been part of coaching since its origins. It forms the W (Will) step of the GROW model and is a core competency in the training of any certified coach.

How It's Applied in Coaching

  1. Define the End Goal: What exactly does the client want to achieve? Use the SMART model.
  2. Break It into Milestones: What are the main steps? What has to happen to reach the objective?
  3. Concrete Actions: For each milestone, define specific, measurable actions with a date.
  4. Necessary Resources: What does the client need for each action? Time, money, support, information?
  5. Anticipate Obstacles: What could get in the way? How will the client handle it if it happens?
  6. Commitment: The client commits to each action. Accountability is key.
