What are SMART Goals in Coaching

SMART goals are a framework for setting objectives that are clear, achievable, and measurable. SMART is an acronym for: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. In coaching, it's used to turn vague wishes into concrete commitments.

Origin and History

The SMART acronym was introduced by George T. Doran in 1981 in the article There's a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management Goals and Objectives. It was quickly adopted across coaching, organizational psychology, and leadership.

How It's Applied in Coaching

  1. Specific: The goal should answer: what exactly do I want to achieve? Avoid vagueness. Not 'I want to be fit,' but 'I want to run 5 km without stopping.'
  2. Measurable: Define how you'll know the goal has been reached. What indicators will you use? What data confirms it?
  3. Achievable: The goal should be challenging but realistic. The client must believe it's possible and have the resources (or be able to get them) to achieve it.
  4. Relevant: The goal must align with the client's values and purpose. Why does it matter to them right now?
  5. Time-bound: Set a concrete deadline. A goal with no date is just a wish.
