What is Emotional Management in Coaching
Emotional management is the ability to recognize, understand, and regulate one's own emotions so that they don't dominate or paralyze us, but instead can be used as valuable information for making better decisions and relating to others more effectively.
Origin and History
The field of emotional management draws from emotional intelligence (Goleman), cognitive behavioral therapy, NLP, and mindfulness. In coaching it has gained prominence as emotions are increasingly recognized as the engine — not the obstacle — of results.
How It's Applied in Coaching
- Recognition: Identify the emotion being experienced. Plutchik's wheel of emotions is a useful tool.
- Acceptance: Emotions are neither good nor bad. They are informational signals. The first step is to accept them without judgment.
- Regulation: Techniques such as box breathing, resource anchoring, or the STOP technique to manage intense states.
- Adaptive Expression: Communicate emotions assertively using NVC.
- Intelligent Use: Use emotions as a compass for decision-making.
