What is Mindfulness and How It's Applied in Coaching

Mindfulness is the practice of paying attention to the present moment intentionally and without judgment. In coaching, it's used as a tool to reduce stress, increase mental clarity, improve decision-making, and develop the client's self-awareness.

Origin and History

Mindfulness has roots in Buddhist meditation dating back more than 2,500 years. In the West, it was introduced as a therapeutic tool by Jon Kabat-Zinn in the 1970s through the MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) program. Today it's used in coaching, medicine, education, and leadership.

How It's Applied in Coaching

  1. Conscious Breathing: Breathing exercises like box breathing to anchor attention to the present.
  2. Body Scan: A mindful scan of the body to detect stored tension and emotions.
  3. Nonjudgmental Observation: Practice observing thoughts as passing clouds, without identifying with them.
  4. The STOP Technique: Stop, Take a breath, Observe, Proceed. A conscious pause in stressful situations.
  5. Mindfulness in Action: Bring full presence to everyday activities like eating, walking, or listening.
