Your client isn't "intelligent" or "not intelligent." They're intelligent in specific ways. When you identify their multiple intelligences profile, you can personalize your coaching in a way that multiplies results. Here's how to do it.
Each person has a unique intelligence profile. Identifying it allows you to personalize coaching with precision.
Gardner's 8 Intelligences: Beyond IQ
Howard Gardner revolutionized our understanding of intelligence in 1983 by proposing that there is no single intelligence measurable by a test. There are at least eight distinct ways to be intelligent, and each person has a unique profile where some are dominant and others are less developed.
For coaching, this is transformative. It means that when your client says "I'm not good at this," the answer isn't to push them through sheer willpower. The answer is to find the intelligence from which they can approach that challenge naturally.
Ease with words, writing, argumentation. Learn through reading and debate.
Abstract reasoning, patterns, systematic analysis. Learn by solving problems.
Visual thinking, ability to visualize, spatial orientation. Learn through images and maps.
Sensitivity to rhythm, tone, and melody. Learn through sound patterns and musical associations.
Body control, coordination, physical expression. Learn by doing and moving.
Understanding others, empathy, social leadership. Learn through interaction with people.
Self-awareness, reflection, understanding your own emotions. Learn through introspection.
Connection with the natural environment, classification, observing patterns in nature.
Multiple Intelligences Assessment in Coaching Session
You don't need a formal psychometric test to identify your client's dominant intelligences. A good coach can do it in 20 minutes with the right questions and careful observation.
Cognitive Profile Identification (20-30 minutes)
Round 1 - Direct Questions (10 min):
When you have free time and no one is watching, what do you do purely for pleasure? (Reveals naturally dominant intelligences.)
If you had to teach someone something, how would you do it? With words? With a diagram? With a hands-on demonstration? (Reveals preferred processing mode.)
What school subjects were you naturally good at without effort? (Dominant intelligences show up early.)
When you face a complex problem, what's your first instinct? Analyze it logically? Talk to someone? Draw it? Feel it intuitively? (Reveals which intelligence leads problem-solving.)
Round 2 - Observation (10 min):
As your client answers, observe: Do they use lots of metaphors and elaborate language? (Linguistic.) Do they gesture a lot? (Bodily-Kinesthetic.) Do they reference how something "feels"? (Intrapersonal.) Do they mention what others think or feel? (Interpersonal.)
Round 3 - Prioritization (10 min):
Briefly present the eight intelligences and ask your client to rank them from highest to lowest based on how they identify. Compare their self-perception to your observation. The discrepancies are very revealing.
How to Adapt Your Coaching to the Intelligences Profile
Once you know your client's profile, your coaching personalizes naturally:
Client with Dominant Linguistic Intelligence
Use writing exercises, journaling, reflection lists. Ask them to articulate their thoughts in writing. Coaching conversations will be their favorite format; leverage it with powerful questions that lead them to articulate what they feel.
Client with Dominant Logical-Mathematical Intelligence
Structure everything in frameworks, models, and systems. Use tools with numerical scores (like the Wheel of Life with 1-10 scale). Give them data and metrics. This client needs to see the logic behind each exercise.
Client with Dominant Interpersonal Intelligence
Incorporate exercises involving other people: 360-degree feedback, conversations with mentors, community work. This client grows through relationships, not in isolation.
Client with Dominant Intrapersonal Intelligence
Give them space for individual reflection. Journaling exercises, meditation, and deep self-evaluation are their natural territory. Don't pressure them to do everything in session; let them process between meetings.
Client with Dominant Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence
Incorporate movement into sessions when possible. Coaching walks, exercises with physical objects, role-playing. This client thinks by doing, not by talking.

Multiple intelligences are one piece of the self-knowledge puzzle. When you connect them with other tools, the picture becomes extraordinarily clear.
Intelligences + IKIGAI
IKIGAI seeks the intersection between what you love, what you do well, what the world needs, and what you can be paid for. Multiple intelligences directly inform two of those quadrants: what you do well (your dominant intelligences) and what you love (the activities your dominant intelligences naturally enjoy).
A client with dominant interpersonal intelligence stuck in a solitary data analysis job probably has a deep disconnection from their IKIGAI. They don't need "more motivation"; they need to redesign their professional life to align with their natural way of being intelligent.
Intelligences + Strengths
Personal strengths are the practical manifestation of intelligences. If your client has high linguistic intelligence, their strengths probably include communication, persuasion, writing, and teaching. The intelligences profile explains the "why" behind the strengths, giving your client a more solid foundation of identity.
When your client says "I'm good at communicating but I don't know why," the intelligences profile gives them the answer: "Because your brain is naturally wired to process and produce language at a level others don't have." That understanding changes your client's relationship with themselves.
Recommended Sequence:
1. Multiple Intelligences to map the base cognitive profile.
2. Personal Strengths to identify how those intelligences manifest in concrete skills.
3. IKIGAI to connect intelligences and strengths with purpose, market, and passion.
Amplify Dominant Intelligence (Don't Fix Weak Ones)
One of the most common mistakes in personal development is focusing on improving weaknesses instead of amplifying strengths. Within the multiple intelligences framework, this translates to a simple rule: invest 80% of effort developing dominant intelligences and 20% managing the weaker ones.
A client with high musical intelligence doesn't need to "improve their math logic" to succeed. They need to find ways to apply their rhythm and harmony-based thinking to their goals. A musician who understands harmony can be extraordinarily good at project management if they learn to see task dependencies as a musical score.
Your job as a coach is to help your client find the translations between their dominant intelligences and the challenges they face. It's not about forcing a capacity that doesn't exist; it's about using what's already strong in creative ways.
Weak intelligences aren't ignored, but managed pragmatically: delegated, compensated with tools, or developed just enough so they're not an obstacle. The goal isn't excellence in everything; it's excellence in what matters.
CoachPro Tools: Multiple Intelligences, IKIGAI, and Strengths Integrated
CoachPro Tools puts the Multiple Intelligences tool at your disposal, where your client completes a guided assessment and gets a visual profile with intensity bars for each intelligence. The result isn't just a pretty graph: it includes practical interpretations and suggestions on how to leverage each dominant intelligence.
The Personal Strengths tool connects naturally with the intelligences profile, and the interactive IKIGAI closes the loop by connecting everything with purpose and professional direction.
These three tools together form a self-knowledge package that gives your client a clarity they rarely experience. And everything inside a professional platform you can use in session or assign as between-session work.
