Try it the way you would use it with a client: score each area from 1 to 10 by tapping the wheel or the cells. Once all 8 areas are scored, you will see a reading of the wheel and how to continue the session.

What is the Wheel of Life?

The Wheel of Life is one of the best-known tools in coaching. It divides life into several areas —health, money, career, love, family and friends, personal growth, fun and home, among others— and asks for a 1 to 10 score for how satisfied the person feels in each one.

Joining the scores draws a wheel. If every area is even, the wheel "rolls" smoothly; if some areas are very low, the wheel gets bent out of shape and shows at a glance where the tension is. That is why it is so useful at the start of a process: it puts into a single picture something the client finds hard to put into words.

What it is used for in a coaching session

How to use the Wheel of Life, step by step

  1. Introduce the areas. Briefly explain what each one covers. You can adapt them to the client: a career process is not the same as a life process.
  2. Ask for a quick score. From 1 to 10, based on how each area feels today, without overthinking it. The first answer is usually the most honest.
  3. Look at the wheel together. Ask what surprises them, what stands out and what they expected to see.
  4. Choose one area. Usually the lowest, or the one that would pull the others up if it improved.
  5. Agree on a first step. Something small and concrete for the coming week, with a date.
  6. Repeat it later. Compare the new wheel with the first one and talk about what changed and why.

How to interpret the results

The goal is not to reach 10 in everything. A wheel with every area at 6 or 7 can reflect a balanced, sustainable life; one with several 9s and a 2 may be hiding an area that is holding the rest back. Some keys for reading it:

Powerful questions for each area

Home

What would a home you enjoy being in look like? What small thing in your home would you change this week?

Career

What would make you feel you are moving forward at work? What work conversation have you been putting off?

Health

Which habit would have the biggest impact on your energy? What stops you from looking after yourself the way you would like?

Money

What does feeling at ease with money mean to you? What money decision are you avoiding?

Personal growth

What would you like to learn or explore this year? When did you last feel you were growing?

Family and friends

Who would you like to be closer to? Which relationship needs a conversation you have not had yet?

Love

What do you need to give and receive in your relationship? What would have to happen for this area to go up one point?

Fun

What activity makes you lose track of time? What time in your week could you set aside just to enjoy yourself?

Common mistakes when using it

Frequently asked questions

How many areas does the Wheel of Life have?

There is no fixed number. The most common version uses 8 areas, but you can adapt them to the client or the type of process: life, career, finances or leadership.

How often should you repeat it?

It is usually done at the start of the process and repeated halfway through and at the end, or every few weeks, to see how each area evolves.

What if every area scores low?

Do not try to work on all of them at once. Choose with the client the area that, if it improved, would pull the others up, and agree on a small, concrete first step.

And if every area scores high?

It is a good chance to talk about what the client wants to protect or take to the next level, and about what makes those areas work.

Can I use it in online sessions?

Yes. It works the same online as in person: share it on screen and score each area together.
